SEO and Performance Improvements

Overview

This document outlines the comprehensive SEO and performance optimizations implemented for the United Tattoo website.

🚀 Performance Improvements

1. Image Optimization (Cloudflare Workers Compatible)

Important Note: Next.js <Image> component is NOT compatible with Cloudflare Workers runtime because it requires Node.js APIs that aren't available in the Workers environment.

What Changed:

  • Used native <img> tags with loading="lazy" attribute
  • Native browser lazy loading for below-the-fold images
  • Kept images.unoptimized: true in next.config.mjs
  • Background images for hero section (CSS-based)

Benefits:

  • Native lazy loading (supported by all modern browsers)
  • No runtime JavaScript overhead
  • Cloudflare Workers compatible
  • Fast initial page load

Alternative for Advanced Optimization: For WebP/AVIF conversion and advanced image optimization on Cloudflare:

Files Modified:

  • next.config.mjs
  • components/hero-section.tsx
  • components/artists-section.tsx
images: {
  // Must be unoptimized for Cloudflare Workers compatibility
  unoptimized: true,
}

2. Hero Section Image Optimization

What Changed:

  • Uses CSS background-image for hero background
  • Optimized for Cloudflare Workers compatibility
  • No JavaScript overhead for image loading

Benefits:

  • Fast initial render
  • Works in Cloudflare Workers runtime
  • Browser-native rendering
  • No hydration issues

Files Modified:

  • components/hero-section.tsx

Implementation:

<div
  className="absolute inset-0 bg-cover bg-center bg-no-repeat"
  style={{ backgroundImage: "url(/united-logo-full.jpg)" }}
  aria-hidden="true"
/>

Note: For production, consider pre-optimizing the hero image to WebP/AVIF format using tools like:

  • Squoosh
  • ImageMagick
  • Sharp
  • Cloudflare Image Resizing API

3. Artists Section Image Optimization

What Changed:

  • Uses native <img> tags with loading="lazy" attribute
  • Browser-native lazy loading for all artist images
  • Cloudflare Workers compatible

Benefits:

  • Native lazy loading (no JavaScript required)
  • Fast and reliable
  • Works in Cloudflare Workers
  • Supported by 95%+ of browsers

Files Modified:

  • components/artists-section.tsx

Implementation:

<img
  src={artist.workImages?.[0]}
  alt={`${artist.name} tattoo work`}
  className="w-full h-full object-cover"
  loading="lazy"
/>

4. Font Preloading

What Changed:

  • Enabled preload: true for Google Fonts
  • Configured display: swap for FOUT prevention

Benefits:

  • Reduced font loading time
  • Eliminated flash of invisible text (FOIT)
  • Better perceived performance

Files Modified:

  • app/layout.tsx
const playfairDisplay = Playfair_Display({
  preload: true,
  display: "swap",
})
